Aligned AI is joining forces with The Wikimedia Foundation, using Wikimedia Enterprise APIs to offer users vast amounts of credible information without the harms.

Providing a safe online digital experience for children is like a game of whack-a-mole for parents. Aligned AI is able to provide this safe digital experience offline, incorporating child-safe and comprehensive content curated by the Wikimedia community. Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project data will be joined by our other content, including thousands of high-quality books from Project Gutenberg and rich datasets from the open data community.

Aligned AI delivers technology that aligns with human well-being at every level, from the most basic level of the algorithm all the way up to the experience and the interface. Our new family technology product, Canvas, delivers the power of agentic AI in a protected, offline environment, assisting families with their digital needs without exposing children to predators, inappropriate content, slop, brain rot, and other online risks.

Internet information quality is a particular concern for parents. Algorithms hyper-personalise content, creating biases that silo us from other perspectives. Unvetted content propagates online, lending us to accept misinformation as fact. Information gathering has become a process of solution-finding rather than critical engagement with material, which may hinder overall cognitive development.

The information crisis is only worsening with the proliferation of AI tools. In a recent study by NewsGuard, the leading AI chatbots relayed false claims in 35% of cases in August of 2025, compared to 18% the previous year.

In response, Aligned AI is introducing Canvas to put humanity safely in the driver's seat of technology and AI. Our goal is not to reject digital tools, but to build them in ways that enhance reasoning and creativity.

That is why we are proudly partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation that hosts Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

With the vast repository of information that Wikipedia offers, Canvas users can access non-algorithmically filtered content in a safe, home environment. Wikipedia serves as the foundation of the Wikimedia open knowledge ecosystem, offering free access to millions of articles in 300+ languages. It is one of the top 10 most visited sites in the world, attracting 15 billion views annually.

The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to verifiability (information backed by citations), neutrality (content without bias), and consensus (no original opinions). Automated review systems flag harmful content and article protection can be applied to pages that are repeatedly vandalised.

Due to the shared ethos of human-driven learning through credible source materials, Aligned AI will be integrating Wikimedia projects onto its new Canvas platform.

Aligned AI’s co-founder and Chief Technologist, Rebecca Gorman, explains:

“We should be able to have the good stuff on the internet, without the bad stuff. By providing child-safe Wikimedia content with Canvas, parents can give their children access to vast amounts of information about the world without having to open up their homes to online harms.”

Parents are increasingly concerned with the inappropriate online content reaching their children’s devices. With Canvas, Wikimedia’s child-friendly datasets are downloaded directly to users’ devices, ensuring children can explore and learn safely without requiring internet access.

As part of Canvas’s information retrieval application, a non-chatbot interface will act as a reference librarian without seeming conscious or like an entity, helping families locate the information they seek. It will ask a series of probing questions, allowing users to refine their research interests. The program will then populate results from Wikimedia’s vast repositories of content. Users can choose which articles they wish to explore, keeping them in control of their learning.
